Hyundai Motor has launched a new self-driving concept car, which is more like a living room than a roadster.
The South Korean car manufacturer refers to its SEVEN concept car, a prototype electric SUV, as an "innovative living space on wheels."
Debuted this week at the 2021 AutoMobility Auto Show in Los Angeles, this high-tech ride has pillar-free passenger doors on the passenger side that can open automatically for easy entry and exit.
Inside, passengers can sit on rotatable recliners or on spacious benches.
According to a press release, it also has a built-in mini-refrigerator, a giant display inside the skylight, and a shoe cabinet that "changes shoes for passengers."
SEVEN is designed with a post-pandemic mentality: According to Hyundai Motor, its "perfect hygienic lounge" is made of bamboo, mineral plaster and antibacterial fabrics, designed to "ensure that all surfaces...are always clean."
There is also a sterile storage room under the bench. After passengers leave, the interior will be bathed in ultraviolet C light, which can inactivate the virus.
The pillar-free bus door on the passenger side opens automatically for easy entry and exit.
According to the press release, "Seven" goes beyond merely transporting your thoughts and reimagining the time and space of your travel. "Enjoy your leisure time, work, and flexible and comfortable communication with others-just like your living space at home."
Sangyup Lee, head of Hyundai's global design, said in a statement that SEVEN's interior "sees passengers as a family living space."
When you start the engine, a pixel light panel will even greet you with a "welcome light" sequence.

Universal Island and Smart Hub (a mobile console with a 27-inch display) can turn the car into a remote work area or entertainment center.
The car’s airflow system is borrowed from passenger aircraft: vents in the roof rails allow air to flow from the top of the vehicle to the floor, and then out of the external ducts behind the rear wheels.
If you really want to drive SEVEN, there is a joystick-like control that can be stowed away when not in use. (The Prophecy, Hyundai's 2020 concept car, also uses a similar design.)
The automaker launched the Ioniq series of electric vehicles with the Ioniq 5 compact crossover this year, and is expected to launch the Ioniq 6 mid-size sedan in 2022. (Sedans are even numbers, and odd numbers are reserved for sport utility vehicles.)

Thomas Schemera, Hyundai's chief marketing officer, said in a statement: "As a concrete proof of Hyundai's vision of'progress for mankind', Ioniq has changed the paradigm of electric vehicle customer experience and can adapt to diverse lifestyles without restriction."
The company said it will start production of Ioniq 7 in 2024, although it is certain that the actual production model may not be more gorgeous than the SEVEN concept.
Last week, Hyundai announced plans to spin off its urban air traffic division into a new company, Supernal, in order to develop autonomous "auto-flying" electric taxis by 2028.
The company said it will also work to integrate the aircraft, which can accommodate up to five passengers, into the existing transportation network and create the necessary infrastructure, which may include a vertical take-off and landing field.
Hyundai Motor demonstrated its prototype flying taxi S-A1 personal aircraft for the first time at the 2020 Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show.
Supernal CEO Jaiwon Shin said in a statement on November 9th: “In adding a new dimension to mobility, our mission is to change the mobility, connections and lifestyles of people and society.”

"We have ambitions at Supernal, but being the first to enter the market is not one of them," he said. "We are working hard to create suitable products and suitable integrated markets. We will use Hyundai Motor Group's large-scale manufacturing expertise to ensure that Advanced Air Mobility reaches the right price point and is available to the public."
Hyundai Motor stated that it envisions a future where passengers use an app—similar to current ride-sharing platforms such as Uber, Lyft, and Bolt—to plan a multi-stage journey from home to destination.
They say such trips may include “from home by car or rail to Advanced Air Mobility'vertiport', electric vertical take-off and landing planes through town, and electric scooters for the last mile.
